There's That Word Again...Niche!

When I first heard the word, "niche" several years ago, I knew it had to do with a company's specialty or target market...but I didn't pay much attention to it. I just described my specialty like everyone else did.

"Let us handle the details so you can enjoy your sacred moment"

"We'll create the atmosphere for your sacred moment"

Sounds catchy right? Hmmmm...maybe. More like, "I heard THAT before!"

Everyone said my website was "great", my business cards "darling" and that my overall brand was "nice". But I wasn't projecting who I really was...want kind of client I wanted. I created the image I thought I should and hoped that eventually, I would attract a certain kind of bride.

That didn't happen. So I went back to the drawing board and started reading up on and studying the footsteps of some very successful wedding planners and other business owners. In a short period of time, I discovered that all I was doing was what everyone else was doing.

I got an awakening one day when someone who is very knowledgeable in the business of being creative told me that he did not "see me" in my business collateral...my website, blog, etc. There was much more to the conversation but bottom line, I had a defining "aha moment".

(Aha moments? Make sure you ALWAYS write these down!)

I read a lot of books and started thinking about who I was and what I was passionate about. I also took inventory of all my talents and skills.

Your assignment for today is to make three columns on a piece of paper and label them "What a Bride Needs", "What My Passions Are", and "What My Talents Are". Start writing everything you can think of that fits under each column and meet me back here on Wednesday for more.

Until next time...

This is a really great post Wendy. I love the "assignment" at the bottom. I'm about to do a similar post and will reference to this... this is a really great exercise! - Michelle Loretta

I was referred to your blog to read up on how to find my niche. I really like your blog and you have great advice! Now I just have to figure out what that niche is.

I think you hit the nail on the head for me. I thought I had it all down but still something just wasn't right. I haven't figured out what my niche is yet, I don't think.
